Import Export Code Registration - an Overview.

The Export Import Code is a unique 10 digit code required for all import and export business owners in India.

Codes are issued by the Department of Commerce's Directorate General for Foreign Trade (DGFT) and do not need to be submitted or renewed. IEC is required by importers to clear customs, process shipments, and remit to foreign banks.

The exporter requests to ship the goods to the IEC and receive the money from the foreign bank. In short, an importer/exporter cannot do business in India without having an IEC.

Eligibilty for IEC Code Registration

All types of business registration: Sole proprietorships, partnerships, limited liability companies, and non-profit organizations engaged in importing and exporting goods, regardless of size, can register for an Import-Export Code.

However, IEC is not required for the import and export of goods for personal use that are not related to trade, manufacturing or agriculture. No need to set up a company
